Lasers Q & A

How Does Sciton BroadBand Light (BBL) Work?

BBL is a noninvasive treatment that uniquely emits many different wavelengths of light. By comparison, a typical laser device only sends out one wavelength.

The advantage of the BBL is that your provider can apply different filters to control which wavelength is used in your treatment. The wavelength is important because it determines how deeply the light penetrates your skin and which tissues absorb the light’s energy.

With the BBL, your provider at Mohs Surgery & Dermatology Center can fully customize your treatment and use the same laser to treat a range of cosmetic concerns.

How Does BBL Eliminate Skin Discolorations?

When BBL is used to treat skin discolorations, the wavelength is filtered so that it stays close to the skin’s surface and is only absorbed by targeted pigments, such as brown melanin in your skin and the reddish-blue shades of blood vessels.

Since the wavelength targets specific pigments, the surrounding skin is not harmed.

BBL treats these skin discolorations:

  • Brown spots and age spots
  • Rosacea
  • Small blood vessels
  • Birthmarks
  • Acne

As the pigments absorb light energy, they break down and are eliminated from your body.

How Does BBL Permanently Reduce Hair Growth?

For hair reduction, the BBL is filtered to use a wavelength absorbed by hair follicles without affecting surrounding tissues. The light energy destroys the hair follicle, so it stops growing hair.

Hair follicles go through a three-stage life cycle. They grow hair, enter a brief transitional stage, then rest. During the resting phase, the existing hair falls out, which is why you naturally shed some hair every day. When the resting phase is over, the follicle cycles back to a growth phase and produces new hair.

BBL only affects the follicle when it’s in a growth stage, so you’ll need 6-8 treatments spaced four weeks apart to catch all the targeted hair follicles while they’re in a growth phase.

How Does BBL Diminish Wrinkles and Tighten Skin?

Your provider at Mohs Surgery & Dermatology Center can adjust the Sciton BBL to go deeper under your skin and use its light energy to tighten existing collagen while stimulating new collagen production.

As old skin sheds at the surface and is replaced by the new growth of collagen-rich skin, your skin tightens, its texture improves, and fine lines and wrinkles are diminished.
