Chemical Peels Q & A

What is a Chemical Peel?

Chemical peels remove one or more layers of skin. As the peel eliminates blemished and damaged skin, new skin that’s strong and undamaged takes its place.

The team at Mohs Surgery & Dermatology Center offer a variety of chemical peels that are safe for all skin types. They effectively treat many skin conditions, such as:

  • Dry, dull skin
  • Skin redness
  • Clogged pores
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Acne and acne scarring
  • Uneven skin tone and texture
  • Brown spots, age spots, and sun damage

Your results and the recovery time needed depend on the chemical peel you choose.

What are the Different Types of Chemical Peels?

The strength of the ingredients in your chemical peel determines how deeply the peel penetrates and the amount of skin removed.

  1. Light Peel: Light chemical peels exfoliate the outer layer of your skin, alleviating dry skin, improving blotchy skin, and diminishing the appearance of fine lines. When you use a light peel, you may not need any downtime and you can get regular treatments to maintain your fresh skin.
  2. Medium Peel: Medium chemical peels go deeper, exfoliating the outer layer and the upper part of the middle layer of your skin. With a medium peel, you can improve skin texture, treat uneven skin tone, and minimize age spots and moderate wrinkles. Your skin is slightly red and swollen for a few days, so most patients take up to a week of downtime.
  3. Deep Peel: Deep chemical peels penetrate to the lower layer of your skin, treating severe hyperpigmentation, sun damage, acne scars, and deeper wrinkles. While a deep peel produces dramatic results, you’ll need about two weeks to heal.

Which Chemical Peels are Available?

The team at Mohs Surgery & Dermatology Center offer a variety of chemical peels, so these are only a few examples of the specialized peels available:

  • Acne Peel: An acne peel smooths out uneven skin, visibly reduces pore size, and clears out congested, clogged pores.
  • VI Peel™: This powerful peel improves skin tone and reduces blemishes, skin discolorations, and fine lines. Plan on several days of skin flaking, with noticeable results a few days later.
  • Obagi Blue Radiance®: The Blue Radiance is a light peel that exfoliates the uppermost layers of dead skin. As a result, your skin is renewed and radiant.
