What is Eczema?

Eczema, or atopic dermatitis, is a chronic condition characterized by red and itchy skin. While eczema most commonly affects children, it can affect adolescents and adults as well.

This condition often has periods of increased severity, and at times it may seem to resolve completely. A flare-up may last a few days or several weeks.

The areas of the body most commonly affected by eczema include the knees, arms, legs, and face. Left untreated, eczema can cause skin infections, systemic inflammatory reactions, and increased severity of symptoms.

What are the Symptoms of Eczema?

Eczema often presents in patches that vary in size and location. These may resolve and reappear over time, and they may be:

• Red and itchy
• Scaly and dry
• Sensitive or raw
• Discolored or thickened

You may also have small, palpable bumps, either on or below the surface of your skin. These bumps may harden or leak fluid when you scratch them.

What Causes Eczema?

The causes of eczema may be a combination of hereditary and environmental factors. A strong risk factor is a family history of eczema or other skin conditions.

Food allergies are also a common cause of eczema. Symptoms can be more severe in response to foods like:

• Milk
• Eggs
• Gluten
• Wheat
• Soy

You may also be at greater risk if you also have conditions like asthma, hay fever, or environmental allergies.

How is Eczema Treated?
