Mohs Surgery Q & A

What is Mohs Surgery?

Mohs surgery is a highly effective technique for the removal of the two most common types of cancer: basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. The Mohs procedure has a 99% cure rate for cancers that have not been treated before and a 94% cure rate for recurrent cancers.

This procedure is unique to other cancer removal surgeries in that it uses a microscopic examination of all removed tissue and detailed mapping of the roots of the cancer, offering the best chance of total removal.

Mohs surgery is ideal for areas where it’s most important to preserve healthy tissue, such as the face, hands, and genitals.

The experts at Mohs Surgery & Dermatology Center are proud to offer this procedure as the gold standard for removal of skin cancers.

How is Mohs Surgery Performed?

Every member of the highly skilled Mohs surgery team is specially trained and works closely with other members to achieve the best outcome possible in the treatment and removal of skin cancer.

Your dermatologist first numbs the treatment area. Then, they remove the visible portion of the growth as well as a small amount of the deeper tissue. This tissue is evaluated immediately, and if cancerous cells are found, they remove progressive layers of tissue until they are certain your skin is free of cancerous cells.

Once all the cancerous tissue has been removed, the dermatologist uses stitches to close any open wounds, and they discuss your cosmetic reconstruction options if needed.

Mohs surgery may take time, especially if you have large or multiple cancerous growths. The dermatology team does everything possible to make you comfortable and keep you well informed at every stage.

What are the Advantages of Mohs Surgery?

Aside from being the most effective method for removal of basal and squamous cell skin cancer, this procedure offers other significant advantages, including:

  • Same-day results
  • Minimal scarring
  • Tissue sparing
  • Little to no recovery time

Mohs surgery is also an outpatient procedure, so you won’t need a lengthy hospital stay.
